What is sin?

Sin is acting with one's own reasoning outside of faith and without guidance of the Spirit of God.

(The Law showed us what sin was)

The Ten Commandments
Exodus 20:2–17 Deuteronomy 5:6–21
2 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery;
3 Do not have any other gods before me.
4 You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me,
6 but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.
7 You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name.
8 Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.
9 For six days you shall labour and do all your work.
10 But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work—you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns.
11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and consecrated it.
12 Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
13 You shall not murder.
14 You shall not commit adultery.
15 You shall not steal.
16 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
17 You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

6 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery;
7 you shall have no other gods before me.
8 You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
9 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and fourth generation of those who reject me,
10 but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.
11 You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name.
12 Observe the Sabbath day and keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you.
13 For six days you shall labor and do all your work.
14 But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work—you, or your son or your daughter, or your male or female slave, or your ox or your donkey, or any of your livestock, or the resident alien in your towns, so that your male and female slave may rest as well as you.
15 Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the sabbath day.
16 Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, so that your days may be long and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
17 You shall not murder.
18 Neither shall you commit adultery.
19 Neither shall you steal.
20 Neither shall you bear false witness against your neighbor.
21 Neither shall you covet your neighbor’s wife. Neither shall you desire your neighbor’s house, or field, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

The is not of love is a good definition of  the image of sin:

1Cr 13:1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

1Cr 13:2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

1Cr 13:3 If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

1Cr 13:4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

1Cr 13:5 It is not rude, it is not self‑seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

1Cr 13:6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

1Cr 13:7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

1Cr 13:8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

1Cr 13:9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part,

1Cr 13:10 but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears.

1Cr 13:11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.

1Cr 13:12 Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

1Cr 13:13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

What is evident in scripture is that those who participate in sin, will not enter the Kingdom of God.

When I say participate, I mean those who are slaves of sin. Those who's master is not the Lord but the god of this world.

(And remember, you can only serve ONE master!)

1Cr 6:9 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders

1Cr 6:10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

1Cr 6:11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

The world's (those who profess no need for God and His Son Jesus the Messiah) response to sin is what they learned through religion and even that it is vague. Sin is what separates from God. But if you do not know God and/or know the Scriptures, you are bound by what perception you see God.

Sin is an evidently unclear view of what is right. The Bible even states that those who sin will even think that they are doing what is right. Imagine that? In sin, yet not knowing that it is sin.

What would reveal that which is done as sin?

Jhn 16:8 When he (The Holy Spirit) comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:

Jhn 16:9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me;

Jhn 16:10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer;

Jhn 16:11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

The Holy Spirit shines light upon sin. So when you here others say that they do not believe in God or they do not believe in the Word of God; then know that they either are lying due to doubt and denial within or they have been turned over to a reprobate mind and are deceived.

God knows who are His and it is the prayer of the righteous that goes far with God. So pray for others who deny Jesus. If they mock you, they actually mock God and He  is big enough to handle them. Our job is to pray and stand in intercession on their behalf.
